1898 Crescent Young Laidies 24 Rare Antique Bicycle

1898 Crescent Young Laidies 24 Rare Antique Bicycle

This is an extremely rare crescent bicycle. It is a 24 young ladies model and it is completly functional adn ridable. There is no model number on the crescent headbadge but the bike's serial number is12300. The bike has not has been restored adn remains pretty much as found.
The frame retains about 60% of its original black paint and, while the exposed metal does show some surface rust, there are no rust-thru's and no dents or dings. The original varnish is still on the matching maple rims and it is in remarkable condidtion as are the rims themselves which are straight adn true to within 3/16. The tires are united states giant #76 chain treads and both hold air and are in excellent condition however, for reasons i can't fathom, an earlier owner seems to have ground the raised logo off (only) the front tire. I am also including (as shown in oen of the pictures), a pair of 24 new-old-stock 'york' chain tread tires suitable for the first class restoration this bicycle deserves.
The extraordinary saddle frame si in perfect condition however the leather and caning had deteriorated completely and were removed. In fact the saddle is a valuable part of the package, it is an extremely rare model and imbossed on the underside of the steam bent ash frame are patent dates in 1892 &1893. Included is the original underlayment material as shown in one fo the pictures. All of the saddle components are forged and machined wtih no stamped pieces. I would estimate that 'the saddle shop' located in edgewater, florida ( in my experience one of the best in the world) would restore the saddle for somewhere about $300. And it would be well worth it to have it done. The measurement from the top of the seat tube to the ground is 27 and the over all length of the bike is 57. The pedals are rusty but in good condition with easily replaceable rubber inserts. There is a solar carbide fork mounted lamp that has decent cosmetics with no chips or cracks on the lenses but it needs work on the chimney section and the water tank cap is missing. There is also a terrific period bell in good wroking order and with decent nickel plating.

Also there are perfect new -old-stock bakaliet hand grips. The mechanics on this bike are excellent and the machining of the cranks, sprockets, and direct drive hub are of a very high quality and what you would expect to see on a crescent bicycle. I am also including a pair of ed lee's gold fork transfers (not water slide decals) that are beautiful and detailed reproductions of this 1890's art which will put the finishing touch no a restoration of this rare machine.

This would be a perfcet bicyle for that daughter or granddaughter you want to join you on your wheelmen rides. Ride it as is ( with a proper saddle of course) or complete an easy restoration. There are thousands of 28 ladies turn of the century bikes out there, many in decent condition, and perhaps a few of them may be crescents however, have you ever seen a 24 young ladies crescent? Packaging and shipping (ups) to most any point in the us should run between $75.00 and $100.00. Teh bike is located in upstate new york and is available pickup or delivery to copake in april.
